This afternoon Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a state disaster emergency due to the winter storm in portions of the Interior and Southcentral Alaska. The declaration covers areas of the state impacted by severe winter storms, extreme winds, and extreme temperatures.
The declaration opens funding from the state’s disaster relief fund for use to respond to and recover from the disaster. Both public and individual funding will be made available, although the details of the funding available won’t be released until a later date.
The announcement indicates the disaster area includes the Upper Tanana Basin Regional Attendance Education Area (REAA), Fairbanks North Star Borough, Denali Borough, Matanuska Susitna Borough, and Copper River Basin REAA. The Delta Greely REAA is included in the disaster area and the area was incorrectly identified in the information posted by the Governor’s office on Facebook.
