Pastor's Pen by Cliff Henry

“But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the Holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

2 Timothy 3:14-15

The name Jesus means Savior. It is the name of the only begotten Son of God. Jesus’ name is a name which Philippians 2:9 says, “is above every name.” The name of Jesus should be held in high honor and reverence. It is so disgusting to hear the precious name of Jesus being used in a slang way and especially in cursing and swearing.

Many parents do not understand the impact that will have upon their children’s memories. I read of a preacher who had gone to Albany, New York to preach. While he was there, he took a day to do a walking tour and ate in a park. An inquisitive youngster began asking him various questions one of which was why was he there? The preacher responded that he had come to preach in a church to which the young man asked what it meant to preach? The preacher stated it meant to tell others about Jesus. At this the young man cupped his hand over his mouth and asked the preacher if he knew that the word Jesus was a curse word, for that is how he heard the name spoken at home.

What a difference in comparison of how young Timothy’s home used the name Jesus, always in honor and reverence verses the youngster in the story. I wonder, how is Jesus’ name spoken from your lips. In love and honor or in profanity?

Think about it.
