Pastor's Pen by Cliff Henry

James 4:17 says, “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

Within many electronic fire alarms is an internal switch. This switch is triggered by a beam of light. As long as that beam of light is unobstructed, everything is fine. Once that beam’s photosensitive receiver is blocked or obstructed by smoke, insect, or moisture, the alarm will sound.

God has created within the conscience of every man an alarm system to right and wrong. The conscience is clear as long as it is not obstructed by sin (wrong), but whenever wrong is done in thought or deed, that inner ‘alarm’ goes off.

The Bible states that those are hardened individuals in their conscience to such a degree that they no longer pay attention to any inner alarm for wrong doing. It is found in Romans 1:28 and is referred to as a “reprobate mind,” which means an unclear mind lacking the ability to decipher truth from error. Paul the apostle wrote in 1 Timothy 4:2 that in the last days this would escalate to a great many due to their continued rejection of truth.

On the positive side, what a great blessing to have that conviction of conscience toward wrongdoing and just as importantly, not proceed with the wrong. It does no good to have an alarm if you will not heed it.

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Timothy reminds us that the scriptures have been given to us to direct us into all truth – the most important warning, the first step if you will to heed, is that of getting right with God. It is the power of God as one is confronted with the truth from the Bible. A person cannot attain Heaven unless they have received Jesus Christ as their Savior. Is the alarm of your heart and conscience pounding right now due to your need of doing that? Don’t delay for the alarm won’t sound forever!

Think about it.
