We humans are complex creatures! The triune nature of our being creates a beautiful, intricate creation of spirit, soul, and body. When that creation functions according to God’s design, it’s like poetry in motion! In fact, Paul said, “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” (Ephesians 2:10)The Greek word for “workmanship” is poiema, from which we get our word “poem”! In other words, we are God’s poem! God spoke, and we became His living message to a desperate and dying world.

Paul also wrote: “You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (2 Corinthians 3:2-3)

What an awesome picture of the amazing, never-failing love of our God! Sometimes, however, our complex triune system malfunctions, and God’s poem no longer rhymes in His people. Our triune and complex being flows together constantly, day and night, in a very complex series of interactions. We tend to separate our three parts into little boxes – but they cannot be separated! Purple is not a primary color, but if you mix red and blue, you’ll get purple. Once mixed, it’s impossible to separate them again! In each one of us, problems can originate or be rooted in one dimension of us, but before long, we will experience the result of symptoms in all three parts – spirit, soul, and body. Listen to what the lame man experienced at the gate called “Beautiful.”

“But Peter said, ‘I do not possess silver or gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!’ And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. With a leap, he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God!” (Acts 3:6-8)

The man walked because he got physically healed. He leaped because he got emotionally healed. And he praised God because he was spiritually restored! When one dimension of our triune being is sick, it affects our entire being. When we understand this, it makes sense that the Lord works to restore our whole person! Merely healing our body would only give us a partial solution. If we are going to minister to people and see them made truly whole, we must understand how these three parts work together and cannot work separately! When our soul is suffering, let’s say with grief, then our physical body will be exhausted, and our spirit can be under relentless attack. Many times when we are going through a difficult time in our life, we have to peel away like an onion to see where our trouble actually originated from!

First, let’s quickly look at our spirit. Paul said, “Be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” In other words, we have the ability to think from the spirit of our mind. We know if someone has an evil spirit, it affects the way they think. Whether they’re possessed or just under spiritual attack, enemy imps or powers are influencing their thoughts. Do you realize our spirit deals with the “dark side” all the time because Jesus said the accuser of the brethren is hammering away at our spirit day and night! (Rev. 12:10) But because of His amazing love and wisdom, God designed us to be spiritually resilient, and most of the time we’re unaware of the level of negativity around us until we are called to be proactive against particular forces in situations. When it needs reinforcements, one of the main ways our spirit communicates with our conscious mind can be through dreams, which the Lord can use to give us guidance, revelation, or discernment during times of need. When that happens, I’ve found that fasting and prayer can make a huge difference in our focus during a battle.

Isn’t it amazing that our bodies were created like they were? For example, anytime we find ourselves fighting a biological battle, our body deploys millions of soldiers called antibodies that go right into front-line combat! If we break a leg, our mind sends pain signals strongly encouraging us to not walk on it!

Our soul is the third member of our triune being, which could be described as “processing from the heart.” I’m convinced our souls know things the other parts are not always aware of. From our soul comes the intangible, illogical parts of our being. The soul is where love, passion, and mercy live. If someone hurts your feelings, or someone you are close to passes away, it affects the way you think. Your soul deals with hurts and disappointments all the time. That’s why we are told to “Cast our cares upon Him, for He cares for us!” One of my all-time verses has been, “What time I am overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” Thank You Lord! But there are times we need a little extra boost, and our soul feels grief, depression, or anger. David knew the remedy! “He restores my soul!!” If you happen to be reading this right now and you don’t feel you can survive the pain, rejection, or discouragement one day longer – listen! This too shall pass! I promise. How? Because He has promised to never put on us more than we can bear! He will complete the work He began in you. He hears every cry. He is moved by your situation. There is no greater love – no, nowhere. Control those toxic thoughts! God knows your heart, and He sees all, and knows all!!

When we live in anything less than righteousness, peace, and joy, we aren’t experiencing everything our Lord paid for in full! Jesus put it this way, “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; but I came that you may have life and have it abundantly!” (John 10:10)We have an enemy that is trying to deprive and deceive us from receiving all the benefits of the Kingdom! The enemy often finds an open door to condemn us when we mess up. If you don’t hear anything else today, hear this.

God is for you! When you mess up, the Holy Spirit will gently convict you, telling you (while still loving you) that you need to repent, that you did something bad. Confess it! Turn away from it. His love remains stable!

But the enemy, he comes and reminds you in Technicolor video over and over what you did wrong. He doesn’t mention repentance. His tools are a broom and a rug. Brush it under. And just when you’re at your lowest, he’ll break the lie that you didn’t do something bad, you are something bad! You might as well give up because you don’t have the strength to change. He leaves a package of hopelessness, condemnation, and no options.

Listen! He is the father of lies! There is always hope in Christ! And it’s His power anyway! Grab hold of that truth, and I guarantee it will change your life! The sun (the Son) will shatter the black cloud that has followed you for as long as you can remember! But God’s great love, and conviction, will remind you of your true identity as a son or daughter of God. What does Romans say? It promises – promises – that nothing shall be able to separate you – nothing can separate you from His eternal, unfailing, unconditional love!

Our minds are amazing creations! That can work for us or against us, depending who and what we listen to! I heard on the news that self-talk is a huge issue. It stated that in a recent study, the average person listens to 12,000 words every few minutes of self-talk, and most of those are negative! Talk about a war! Talk about constant battle! We also tend to trust ourselves more than others! Talk about a confidence downer, a sure-fire way to destroy your faith! That’s another reason the Word says how critical to know His Word, and be ready to rightly divide the words and give a reason for the hope that is in you – sometimes that includes speaking to yourself!

Ezekiel spoke to a boneyard, and a mighty army emerged. But Solomon said “life and death are in the power of the tongue!” (Proverbs 18:21) Look at the warning James gave us about shooting off our mouths before thinking:

“Look at the ships … though driven by strong winds, they’re directed by a very small rudder … so also the tongue, though small, see how great a fire is set aflame by it!” James 3:4-5

Our tongue is like the rudder of a ship. It can steer us into safe waters in a battle or storm, or we can take hold ourselves and verbalize poisonous words against others or even ourselves. Ruminate on that: It’s possible to talk yourself to death!

Church, we must be wise as serpents and gentle as doves! We are complex beings! We must continually cultivate the garden of our hearts by feeding our minds with truth – agree with what God says about a situation. We must refuse to believe lies about ourselves that then sows weeds into our hearts. Weeds destroy our faith and undermine our destiny. And finally, we must water the orchard of our hearts with words that build, edify, and comfort us, realizing that we are the beloved of God!

Beloved, is there anything too hard for God? He is for you, not against you! In less than a minute, with a sincere prayer, you have the ability and the authority to change the path and course of your life or a part of your life! Is a minute of your time worth it?

Yes, it truly is that simple, which is why God’s wish that we would not forget the simplicity of the Gospel.

Ruminate on that!
