The Delta Greely School District released the names of the three finalists for the position of superintendent Tuesday afternoon. The finalists are, Brett Stirling, who is presently the principal at Delta Junction High School; Christopher Aguirre, who is currently the assistant superintendent of the North Slope Borough School District; and Shaun Streyle, who is currently the Interim Superintendent for Copper River School District.
The District solicited applications through the Alaska Association of School Boards and the School Board was scheduled to review the initial round of applicants on Feb. 15. Following an executive session that night, the Board announced it was extending the application period. No reason for the extension was given. Last night the Board again held an executive session to review applications.
Public records requests for the applicant information and that the deliberations be held in open session has been denied by the District, despite the existence of a ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court that such information and deliberations are public.
The District did release the following information about the finalists:
“Christopher Aguirre who is currently the assistant superintendent of the North Slope Borough School District having served in that capacity since 2017. Previously he was the Kodiak High School Principal from 2014-2017, Chief of Staff of Academic Affairs at Paul Quinn College (Dallas, TX) 2013-2014, and also served in several principal positions in New York State. Mr. Aguirre has a B.A. in Geography from Humboldt State; an M.A. in Educational Technology from Pepperdine, a certificate in Education Administration from Mass. College of Liberal Arts and his Superintendent Endorsement will be awarded in June 2019.
“Shaun Streyle who is currently the Interim Superintendent for Copper River School District. He became the Assistant Superintendent for CRSD in 2017 and before that was principal in both Glennallen and Kenny Lake Schools. He also spent eight years in Bering Strait School District as a teacher. Shaun holds a BS from Northern State University in SD. He received his M.Ed in Educational Leadership from the University of Alaska Southeast with a Superintendent Endorsement to be issued June 2019.
“Brett Stirling who is presently the principal at Delta Junction High School, having started there in 2016. Brett worked in several villages within the Lower Kuskokwim School District including nine years as a principal. Mr. Stirling has a B.A. in English and Philosophy from Ohio Wesleyan Univ., an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from U.A.F., Graduate Certificate: Principal from U.A.A. and a Graduate Certificate of Educational Leadership: Superintendent from U.A.S. Mr. Stirling currently holds his Alaska Certification with a Superintendent Endorsement.”
Site tours and interviews with the candidates are scheduled for March 7-8. A public candidate forum will be held on Thursday, March 7, 4 – 6 p.m. at Delta Elementary School.
The board is expected to choose a new superintendent following an executive session on March 8.
