The Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) has closed the DC485 Nelchina Caribou Hunt as of Tuesday night. The department says the harvest quota of 225 caribou for the hunt has been reached. ADF&G had indicated earlier hunts were likely to close this year by emergency order to maintain the herd at the desired population.
“The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s summer 2021 estimate for the Nelchina herd is approximately 38,400 caribou. To prevent overharvest, maintain adequate sex ratios, and maintain the herd within abundance objectives, the department determined a harvestable surplus of 1,600 caribou.”
The harvest is spread out over six state hunts and the federal subsistence hunt. The department says winter hunts are not likely to open.
